The Best Italian Destinations

Thinking about a trip to Italy and sick of wasting your vacation days lying on a beach, soaking up dangerous UV rays? Check out Milan (to see Da Vinci’s Last Supper masterpiece) or Rome (to see its many historical and religious landmarks) and you will have enough to do to keep you busy for as many vacation days as you’re willing to take!

Head to Milan’s Santa Maria delle Grazie church to see Da Vinci’s Last Supper for yourself. There is something magical about witnessing the famous painting of the Last Supper in its authenticity. However, tickets for the Last Supper are limited and with the publication of Dan Brown’s best-seller, The Da Vinci Code, in 2003, there is now increasing desire for Last Supper tickets. It is best to buy Last Supper tickets in advance to ensure that you don’t miss out on Da Vinci’s masterpiece.

If you’ve never been to Rome, then you haven’t seen one of the most beautiful, historically rich, significant places in the world. Not only is Rome home to historical structures like Chiesa Nuova Church and the Colosseum, it is also very modernized. In one visit to Rome, you can uncover thousands of years of history on a crypts and catacombs tour and take a tour based on Dan Brown’s bestseller, Angels and Demons. Rome hop on hop off sightseeing tours offer a comprehensive tour of Rome, allowing you to disembark the bus at your leisure at any of the over 15 stops.  One thing is certain: there are tons of sights to see in Rome and a hop on hop off Rome bus tour will show you all of Rome’s highlights.

Basic Information About Venice Italy Vacations

When you decide to visit Venice, you may have a lot of questions about Venice, Italy vacations. Most people think that the only way to get around Venice is by gondola. That is true between the 188 islands that make up this city, but once you are on each island, the main mode of transportation is walking. Today, it is mainly tourists that use gondolas, just for the experience, as most of the residents have their own private boats, use waterbuses or taxis or ferries in places where there are no bridges. There are more than 400 bridges connecting the islands in addition to the canals.

The city of Venice is very unique because of its layout. The streets have very interesting names, with the smallest ones being called calli and the strands that line the canals are called fondamenta. Canals that were filled in to make streets are called rii terra and a campo is a plaza in front of a church. The only real square in the city is St. Mark’s Square.

When you visit Venice there are certain rules that you must abide by. These are:

* You are not permitted to lie down in public places nor are you permitted to eat or linger on city streets.

* Swimming in the canals and in St. Mark’s bay is prohibited

* You cannot ride a bicycle or use any form of vehicle on the city streets

* You are not allowed to undress in public places or walk about without a shirt or in a bathing suit.

If you violate these rules you will be fined.

Every year millions of tourists come to Venice to watch or take part in the rowing regattas. In addition to the Historical Regatta, there are more than 120 others. The rowing season is from April to September. Other annual events that take place in the city include the Farevetro, which is one hundred arts and crafts techniques at one venue, the Engraving of the City Views and the feast of the patron saint, Madonna dell’Apparizone.

The Piazza del Marco is the most famous piazza in Venice Although it looks to be a rectangle, it is actually a trapezoid with the Basilica of San Marco as the centerpiece. Some of the buildings along the piazza date back to the 1600’s. You will have an excellent view of the city from the bell tower of the basilica , which is one of the highest points in the city. The Bridge of Sighs is one of the most romantic places in the city, as well as being a historical landmark. Take a guided tour of the Monastero Mekhitarista to see some of the ancient manuscripts and relics collected and preserved by the monks since the beginning of the 18th century.

Accommodations are quite plentiful in Venice and in price ranges designed to suit all budgets. Experience the Venetian food or stick with the tried and true with the numerous restaurants and fast-food establishments. Get a map of the city and set out to explore on your own, keeping in mind that you do have to be careful in times of acqua alta, or the flooding of the streets during the thunderstorms that occur in the spring and fall.

Cheap Italy Vacation

For the budget conscious traveler an Italian vacation may seem far out of reach. But many people are surprised to find that visiting this destination may be well within the cards. One of the most expensive aspects of a vacation is usually the airfare and hotel. So what are the options available for those who want to enjoy Italy and save at the same time?

Well for starters you may want to go on your vacation to Italy during the off season. This will mean that you will find cheaper airfares. There are great prices to be found for airfare, especially if you plan to fly directly from a major international airport such as New York or London. All airfare rates drop dramatically after the summer. Hotel rates per night will also be more affordable. After the summer many hotels are recovering from the large numbers of people that came through their doors. You will find out that  most places are happy for customers that provide them with business during the off peak season.

Service could be even better simply because there are fewer people to serve and focus on. The lines are also shorter for almost everything. Peak season is the summer months of June through August. So why not plan to go in September if you can? You will still enjoy all the sights and the remnants of great summer weather. For example Rome in July can go up to 92 degrees but may be 80 degrees in September. The advantage of going on your Italian vacation during the off-peak season is that the crowds are not there, the weather is slightly cooler and Italy becomes more of itself. You can really experience Italy and its people if you go in the off season and you will save some money too. Not only are hotels and airfares cheaper in the off season but you will also find discounts available for guided tours and concerts.

Another way to save on your vacation is to take public transportation whenever possible rather than a taxi. Of course this needs some planning in advance, or you could spend numerous hours lost and wasting valuable time. But with an adventurous spirit and an Italian pocket dictionary in hand it can be done! Italy is well known for its extensive rail network. You can get a rail pass or buy tickets as you go. Either way, this option will help you save if you are on a budget.

Another great tip for a cheap Italy vacation is to forgo the hotel altogether. Rent a house or an apartment for a few days and you will save tremendously. This is especially true if you also factor in the presence of a kitchen that can allow you to make some of your meals rather than rely on dining out for every meal. Even if you have to stay at a hotel you should also consider fixing some simple meals such as sandwiches when you can especially if you come across a grocery store.

There are many things you can do to save on a vacation. For more information on Italian vacations click here or visit Italiantourism.com.
